The 28-year-old supermodel and her friend Leah McCarthy were fined $1,000 in Cayman Islands Dollars after their court appearance on July 12. The incident unfolded on July 10 when Hadid and McCarthy were detained upon their arrival on a private aircraft. A subsequent luggage search conducted by Customs & Border Control revealed a small quantity of marijuana, leading to their arrest. Two days later, they were charged with two offenses: the importation of a controlled substance and the importation of drug paraphernalia, as disclosed in court documents obtained by internet sources. The legality of traveling to the Cayman Islands with cannabis remains a question. In a statement provided to internet sources on Tuesday, a representative for Hadid clarified that the model had marijuana in her possession, which had been legally obtained in New York City with a valid medical license. Hadid's representative added, "Medical use of marijuana has been legal in Grand Cayman since 2017. Her record remains unblemished, and she thoroughly enjoyed the rest of her time on the island."

According to a fact sheet published by the National Drug Council of the Cayman Islands in 2019, "It is illegal to import or export cannabis in any form across the Cayman border. This applies to all countries, whether it is legal there or not." This includes cannabis products prescribed for medical purposes. While recreational use of cannabis is prohibited in the Cayman Islands, extracts and derivatives of cannabis can be used for therapeutic and medical reasons under the supervision of a licensed doctor.
